Chemicals Capital Investments in the Climate Change Era

Opening comments provided by Mark Eramo, Global Leader – Fuels, Chemicals & Resource Solutions, and Tony Potter – Chemicals, Derivatives, Plastics & Materials Lead, S&P Global Commodity Insights

A significant challenge of the climate change era for chemical companies is sourcing capital requirements to meet the needs of growing hydrocarbon-based markets, while also investing in clean energy sources and non-hydrocarbon feedstocks in an uncertain business environment.

Investments in chemicals have traditionally sought to achieve four key objectives to remain competitive: low-cost energy & feedstocks; world-scale technology; access to growth markets; and an integrated position. In the climate change era, a fifth objective has emerged: carbon emissions management:

  • Is the model of build at low-cost and ship to high-demand growth centers being challenged
  • Will supply chains relocate to countries with strategies to address climate change?
  • What will be the impact as mainland China shifts from net-importer of chemical supplies to net-exporter, representing a major, disruptive paradigm shift for global chemical markets.
